“LET’S ROCK: FROM SHAKESPEARE TO TUPAC,” A NEW PLAY, CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH WITH A TRIBUTE TO BLACK POETS OVER THE AGES
A New Carpa Theater Co. production conceived by Rod Ambrose and directed by James E. Garcia premieres June 27-28 at ASU Kerr in Scottsdale, AZ.
The one-act dramatizes the work of major Black poets over the ages — and a certain bard from the old country.
The performance features dramatic renditions of the poetry of William Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Maya Angelou, Sojourner Truth, Oscar Brown, Jr., Yusef Iman, Nikki Giovanni, Tupac Shakur, Phoenix-based poets Christopher Owens, Rashaad Thomas and Therosia Reynolds and others.
“I call this show a ‘word music’ showcase because it brings to the stage poetry, music, and visuals built on universal themes of love, justice, and the enduring activism of hope that’s echoed across generations,” said Ambrose, a renowned actor and director and co-founder of the Black Theater Troupe in Phoenix. “Let’s Rock is a tribute to language as a force for change and an invitation to audiences to celebrate the artistry and activism that thrives in every era.”
