A Black cowboy play about legacy, family, and triumph over betrayal.
El Dorado’s Gold tells the story of Tucker Callahan, a Black cowboy who returns to his ranch after betraying his family and seeks redemption. His mother presents him with letters from his late great-grandfather, believing they will change his life because “it’s time.”
Playwright Camille states, “The Black cowboy culture is not just a trend but it’s an amazing lifestyle for many. Growing up, I didn’t see people like me in the Westerns that my dad and grandfather watched, but we were very much a part of those stories off screen. Now I have the opportunity to tell my story, their story, and it feels amazing!”
This production is led by Camille as director, joined by Pamela Roberts-Davis as Assistant Director, Dion Belcher as Stage Manager, Set Construction by Roy Reinhardt, Props by Cheryl Briley, and featuring actors, Bee Byrd, Candace Claiborne, Raphael Hamilton, Forever Hues, Tiffany Gordon, David Logan, Tahny Newbill, John Pene, Isaiah Perkins, Du’pree Smith, Roosevelt Watts.
TBI Artistic Director Amie Bjorklund had this to say in the last run, “The Bridge Initiative is excited to work with Sonja on her beautiful play El Dorado’s Gold. It’s a part of Arizona’s history that deserves to be uplifted and shared with as many people as possible. And what better partner than ASU Kerr, in their historic space that celebrates Western history in its architecture. This is the first fully produced play Bridge is bringing to ASU Kerr, and I can’t think of a more perfect play to make that happen. I am grateful to Tracey Mason and the team for helping make this happen. I look forward to seeing everyone there.”
