A party as much as a performance, Trombone Shorty’s legendary live show blurs the lines between funk, soul, R&B, and psychedelic rock. He’s a commanding presence, an undeniable star who leaps between instruments and infects the audience with his contagious energy and almost athletic approach to musicianship. Shorty’s band, Orleans Avenue, matches that intensity with razor-sharp musicianship and an undeniable groove. Together, they create a wall of sound that’s tight yet improvisational, leaving room for solos, call-and-response with the audience, and moments of pure spontaneity. Clap, sing along, and dance across the lush lawn of the East Bowl amphitheater in the street parade spirit—a joyous wave of New Orleans culture, refracted through funk, rock, and modern energy.
He’s played every major festival, toured with everyone from Jeff Beck to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and collaborated across genres with Pharrell, Bruno Mars, Mark Ronson, Foo Fighters, ZHU, Zac Brown, Normani, and Ringo Starr. Born Troy Andrews, Trombone Shorty got his start (and nickname) earlier than most: at age 4, he made his first appearance at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, performing with Bo Diddley; at 6, he was leading his own brass band; and by his teenage years, he was touring in Lenny Kravitz’s band. Shorty has performed four times at the Grammy Awards, six times at the White House, on dozens of TV shows, and at the star-studded Sesame Street Gala, where he was honored with his own Muppet. His Trombone Shorty Foundation supports youth music education, and he received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for his first children’s book. Meanwhile, in his native New Orleans, Shorty now leads his own Mardi Gras parade atop a giant float crafted in his likeness. His fifth album, “Lifted” (2022), taps into the raw power and exhilarating grooves of his legendary live show.
