As you know, “Soul Food,” is our staple! Neckbones, chitlins, catfish, pickled pig feet, fried chicken, etc. have fed generations of Black people. You may (or may not) be surprised to know that the Valley of the Sun has done an admirable job of continuing the soul-food tradition and is home to a number of eateries.
Of course, I haven’t listed all of the soul-food restaurants, but these are ones that I know best!
Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Cafe
808 E Jefferson St
Mrs. White’s is the long-time champ of Soul Food in the Phoenix area! That fried chicken is unbelievable!
Lo-Lo’s Chicken and Waffles
Locations in Phoenix, Gilbert and Scottsdale
Make sure you plan to take a nap after you go to Lo-Lo’s because you will catch a serious case of the “Itis!” You’ll want to eat everything on the menu! Lo-Lo embodies what a real soul food restaurant is all about!
Honey Bears BBQ
5012 E Van Buren St, Phoenix – (602) 273-9148
Honey Bears is a long-time Phoenix tradition! I love the ribs and the BBQ Chicken sandwich! The Central Avenue location closed in March 2022 but the Van Buren location (the original) remains open!
Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ
2030 East Rio Salado Pkwy
Tempe, AZ 85281
I wish I could eat at Lucille’s every day! The food is amazing! I’m a big fan of all the BBQ dishes! In fact, I’ve never eaten anything but BBQ there! I hear that the catfish and shrimp is off tha chain, but I’m addicted to the BBQ. Lucille’s makes you feel like you’re in the South and it’s an ideal restaurant for large parties. I love to go to Lucille’s on weekends because they usually have live blues performances.
1635 E Baseline Rd, Suite 105
Phoenix, AZ 85042
Many transplants from Chicago will tell you that Harold’s Chicken is the best thing since sliced bread! Harold’s Chicken was birthed in Chicago and a franchise location was finally established in South Phoenix in October 2019. It’s a small restaurants so don’t expect to bring a large party for a sit-down dinner. You’ll have to stand in line, order your food, and bring it home.
2603 N Central Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85004
The Home of the Chicken And Waffle Margarita! The menu is filled with tasty dishes and the reviews for this restaurant have been overwhelmingly positive! If you’re in the mood for delicious food and great adult beverages, check out Brunch Problems! Make reservations!
West-Alley BBQ & Smokehouse
111 W. Boston Street
Chandler, AZ 85225
Downtown Chandler location that has become an entertainment and dining hub for Black folks in the East Valley! Live music on most evenings.
Brunch N Sip
3950 E. Indian School Rd
Phoenix, AZ 85018
Delicious breakfast and lunch meals and alcoholic beverages in a fun environment for adults. I love the fact that the menu is always updated with fresh new concepts.
SugarJam The Southern Kitchen
15111 North Hayden Rd – Suite 170
Scottsdale, AZ 85260
Love it when you can order your food online! SugarJam The Southern Kitchen has been a major hit in the Valley since it opened a few years ago. DJs play your favorite soul, R&B and hip-hop music inside the restaurant while the delicious soul food does a happy dance in your mouth!
Momma’s Soul Fish & Chicken
15414 N 19th Avenue, Suite H
Phoenix, AZ 85023
We’re especially excited about Momma’s Soul Fish & Chicken because the restaurant is less than a mile away from Mr. PhxSoul.com’s childhood home in north Phoenix! Based on the reviews we’ve seen, this soul food spot may be one of the best in the Valley of the Sun! The owners are from St. Louis and we hear that the customer service is outstanding!
3340 West Southern Avenue
Phoenix, AZ 85041
Brunch House continues to bring in big crowds for brunches and local entertainment! The Brunch House is better suited for adults who want to dance and listen to R&B and hip-hop while eating their meals and drinking!
