Looking for Great Soul Food in the Phoenix Area? Chew on this List of Restaurants

As you know, “Soul Food,” is our staple! Neckbones, chitlins, catfish, pickled pig feet, fried chicken, etc. have fed generations of Black people. You may (or may not) be surprised to know that the Valley of the Sun has done an admirable job of continuing the soul-food tradition and is home to a number of eateries.
Of course, I haven’t listed all of the soul-food restaurants, but these are ones that I know best!
Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Cafe

Mrs. White’s is the long-time champ of Soul Food in the Phoenix area! That fried chicken is unbelievable!
Lo-Lo’s Chicken and Waffles
Locations in Phoenix, Gilbert and Scottsdale
Make sure you plan to take a nap after you go to Lo-Lo’s because you will catch a serious case of the “Itis!” You’ll want to eat everything on the menu! Lo-Lo embodies what a real soul food restaurant is all about!
Honey Bears BBQ
5012 E Van Buren St, Phoenix – (602) 273-9148
Honey Bears is a long-time Phoenix tradition! I love the ribs and the BBQ Chicken sandwich! The Central Avenue location closed in March 2022 but the Van Buren location (the original) remains open!

I wish I could eat at Lucille’s every day! The food is amazing! I’m a big fan of all the BBQ dishes! In fact, I’ve never eaten anything but BBQ there! I hear that the catfish and shrimp is off tha chain, but I’m addicted to the BBQ. Lucille’s makes you feel like you’re in the South and it’s an ideal restaurant for large parties. I love to go to Lucille’s on weekends because they usually have live blues performances.
Harold’s Chicken

Many transplants from Chicago will tell you that Harold’s Chicken is the best thing since sliced bread! Harold’s Chicken was birthed in Chicago and a franchise location was finally established in South Phoenix in October 2019. It’s a small restaurants so don’t expect to bring a large party for a sit-down dinner. You’ll have to stand in line, order your food, and bring it home.

Downtown Chandler location that has become an entertainment and dining hub for Black folks in the East Valley! Live music on most evenings.

SugarJam The Southern Kitchen

Love it when you can order your food online! SugarJam The Southern Kitchen has been a major hit in the Valley since it opened a few years ago. DJs play your favorite soul, R&B and hip-hop music inside the restaurant while the delicious soul food does a happy dance in your mouth!
Momma’s Soul Fish & Chicken

We enjoyed our visit at Momma’s Soul Fish & Chicken back in 2024! This soul food spot may be one of the best in the Valley of the Sun! The owners are from St. Louis and the customer service is outstanding!
Momma’s East Valley location is open but they permanently closed the north Phoenix location in December 2024!
Brunch House

Brunch House continues to bring in big crowds for brunches and local entertainment! The Brunch House is better suited for adults who want to dance and listen to R&B and hip-hop while eating their meals and drinking!

I miss Mrs. White’s, I used to live in Phoenix, I and my children would eat at Mrs. White’s a couple times a month for a special treat. I live in Colorado now and we always talk about Mrs. White’s. We miss the great food and environment. Moved back to take of my mom. I hope someday I will make it back to go visit the restaurant again.

I know this list is old but Lucille’s needs to come off of there. I went and ordered their three meat plate and then asked for a couple pieces of bread. Waiter told me it would be three dollars because they don’t want people to just make a pulled pork sandwich. The three meat is more expensive, if I want to turn my pulled pork into a sandwich I should be allowed to. Texas bbq orders just come with bread.
