Looking for Great Soul Food in the Phoenix Area? Chew on this List of Restaurants
As you know, “Soul Food,” is our staple! Neckbones, chitlins, catfish, pickled pig feet, fried chicken, etc. have fed generations of Black people. You may (or may not) be surprised to know that the Valley of the Sun has done an admirable job of continuing the soul-food tradition and is home to a number of eateries.
Of course, I haven’t listed all of the soul-food restaurants, but these are ones that I know best!
Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Cafe
808 E Jefferson St
Phoenix, AZ
(602) 262-9256
Mrs. White’s is the long-time champ of Soul Food in the Phoenix area! That fried chicken is unbelievable!
Lo-Lo’s Chicken and Waffles
Locations in Phoenix, Gilbert and Scottsdale
Make sure you plan to take a nap after you go to Lo-Lo’s because you will catch a serious case of the “Itis!” You’ll want to eat everything on the menu! Lo-Lo embodies what a real soul food restaurant is all about!
Honey Bears BBQ
2824 N Central Ave, Phoenix – (602) 279-7911
5012 E Van Buren St, Phoenix – (602) 273-9148
Honey Bears is a long-time Phoenix tradition! I love the ribs and the BBQ Chicken sandwich! I’ve been to all of the Phoenix-area restaurants, but my favorite is the Van Buren location (the original) because it has that down-home feel to it!
Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ
Tempe Marketplace
2030 East Rio Salado Pkwy
Tempe, AZ 85281
480-966-RIBS (7427)
I wish I could eat at Lucille’s every day! The food is amazing! I’m a big fan of all the BBQ dishes! In fact, I’ve never eaten anything but BBQ there! I hear that the catfish and shrimp is off tha chain, but I’m addicted to the BBQ. Lucille’s makes you feel like you’re in the South and it’s an ideal restaurant for large parties. I love to go to Lucille’s on weekends because they usually have live blues performances.
Ezekiel’s Restaurant
4825 E. Warner Road
Ahwatukee/Phoenix
(480) 785-4886
Ribs, chicken and fish are the specialties at this Ahwatukee eatery. I sampled the ribs – they’re pretty good. It’s a small joint so don’t expect to bring a large party for a sit-down dinner unless you use the patio.
Harold’s Chicken
1635 E Baseline Rd, Suite 105
Phoenix, AZ 85042
Many transplants from Chicago will tell you that Harold’s Chicken is the best thing since sliced bread! Harold’s Chicken was birthed in Chicago and a franchise location was finally established in South Phoenix in October 2019. It’s a small restaurants so don’t expect to bring a large party for a sit-down dinner. You’ll have to stand in line, order your food, and bring it home.
Trapp Haus BBQ
511 E. Roosevelt Street
Phoenix, AZ 85034
Had a great dinner with my family at Trapp Haus BBQ in March 2018! Wow … the food at Trapp Haus has big taste served up in a small space! Trapp Haus is a Black-owned restaurant on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix. This is an excellent location! The only drawback is size of the restaurant! Hopefully the owner will expand the square footage!
West-Alley BBQ & Smokehouse
111 W. Boston Street
Chandler, AZ 85225
Downtown Chandler location that has become an entertainment and dining hub for Black folks in the East Valley! Live music on most evenings.
The Root and Soul
14144 N 100th Street, Suite B-130
Scottsdale, Arizona
Where soul food goes gourmet. Traditional southern cooking with a Cajun flair.
Charlie Mae’s Soul Food
6115 S 51st Ave, Suite #204
Laveen AZ 85339
Delicious Southern Homestyle Cooking for the Soul! I love the fact that you can order your meal online.
