In Search of Bengali Harlem is a 2022 documentary that tells the story of the mid-20th century Bengali Muslim community in Harlem through the eyes of actor and playwright Alaudin Ullah. As a young man, Ullah rejected his heritage, but as an adult, he embarked on a journey to uncover his parents’ past, discovering a lost history of his father and hundreds of other Bengali men who married into African American and Puerto Rican communities. The film explores the history of this multiracial community and the challenges and triumphs of immigrant life.
