Local filmmaker Bruce Nelson will host a special screening of REDLINE: Veterans of Washington-Escobedo, featuring a powerful scene about Medal of Valor recipient SSG Manuel V. Mendoza. The event will spotlight the overlooked history of African American and Latino veterans from Mesa’s historic Washington-Escobedo neighborhood.
The documentary tells the story of men of color who fought in three wars—while also battling racism in America and within the armed forces. These veterans fought with bravery, sacrifice, and dignity, yet their contributions have long been absent from Mesa’s official history.
“This screening is about more than one man’s valor,” said Nelson. “It’s about restoring a community’s rightful place in history and honoring the generations that built North Town with courage and resilience.”
The event will include:
- Screening of the Mendoza scene from REDLINE Veterans Documentary
- Q&A with filmmaker Bruce Nelson
- Fundraising appeal to support documentary completion & distribution
Proceeds from the screening will support post-production, distribution, and educational outreach for the documentary.
