Arizona State University’s Project Humanities to Host 12th Annual Hacks for Humanity on October 10-12
Arizona State University’s Project Humanities announces its 12th annual “Hacks for Humanity: Hacking for the Social Good,” taking place October 10-12, 2025, in Tempe, Arizona. This 36-hour hackathon welcomes not only tech enthusiasts but artists, entrepreneurs, scientists, educators, activists, students and community members to build digital solutions that address critical and timely social issues.
Unlike conventional hackathons typically reserved for computer programmers and developers, “Hacks for Humanity” invites participants from all backgrounds to contribute to creative problem-solving rooted in ASU Project Humanities’ core Humanity 101® principles: compassion, empathy, forgiveness, integrity, kindness, respect and self-reflection.
2025 Tracks:
This year’s event centers three pressing themes:
• Nutrition and Wellbeing: With inflation, rising food prices, and limited access to fresh ingredients, how can communities—especially those experiencing homelessness—ensure accessible, affordable, and nutritious options for all?
• Community Engagement: How can individuals and groups build trust, foster connection, and ignite meaningful change within their communities?
• Misinformation/Disinformation: In an era of rapidly spreading digital content, how can people distinguish truth from falsehood, understand power dynamics, and counter the influence of misinformation?
“Our hope is that attendees–whether as team competitors, mentors, volunteers, Sponsors, Supporters, or judges will leave this year saying that it was the best event ever!” – Dr. Neal A. Lester, Founding Director of ProjectHumanities.
What to Expect:
Participants will work in interdisciplinary teams to develop functional prototypes or platforms responding to their selected track. The experience includes:
• Mentorship from and collaboration with industry and community leaders
• Wellness-focused activities, mindfulness breaks, and provided meals throughout the event
• Cash prizes for top three teams: 1st Place: $1,000 per team member; 2nd Place: $700 per team member; 3rd Place: $500 per team member
• Additional Popular Choice awards will recognize the Best Mentor, Best Website and Most Helpful team member.
