Dionne Warwick received her first Grammy Award in 1968 and became the first African-American solo female artist of her generation, to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Vocal Performance.
According to Billboard Magazine, Dionne is second as the female vocalist with the most Billboard Hot 100 chart hits during the rock era (1955-1999), charting a total of 56 hits. She has also scored a dozen consecutive Top 100 crossover hits on the Rhythm & Blues and Adult Contemporary charts.
Her classics include “Walk on By,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Message to Michael,” “Promises Promises,” “A House Is Not a Home,” “Alfie,” “Say a Little Prayer,” “This Girl’s in Love with You,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Reach Out For Me,” and the theme from “Valley of the Dolls.”
Warwick is probably best known for the landmark song, “That’s What Friends Are For,” recorded with longtime friends Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight.
