In an effort to raise awareness about the many contributions that Black inventors, scientists, activists, athletes, artists and musicians have made throughout the world, Gizette Knight, CEO of Reality Dreams LLC, spearheaded the Black History Mural project in February 2021.
Knight started Reality Dreams LLC in 2019 to bring resources to marginalized communities.
“Our goal is to raise capital through entertainment, awareness and fellowship,” said Knight. “We then use the money to help improve or shed light on impoverished communities.”
Under Knight’s leadership, local artists painted 28 murals for the 28 days in Black History Month in the downtown Phoenix area.
Not every Black figure painted has name or face recognition. However, the mural project aims to pay tribute to those that haven’t received an overwhelming amount of accolades.
“This project illustrates that Black people’s contribution to society is not limited to mainstream Black figures,” said Knight.
Some of the downtown Phoenix locations for the murals include the George Washington Carver Cultural Center and Museum, Frida’s Garden, Phoenix Suns Arena, Carly’s Bistro and The Nash.
