15th Annual SEF Thurgood Marshall College Fund Brunch to Honor Former Phoenix Vice Mayor Michael Johnson on September 29
PHOENIX – The Sphinx Educational Fund (SEF) and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will host the 15th Annual SEF Thurgood Marshall College Fund Brunch on September 29 at the Sheraton Mesa at Wrigleyville West – 860 N Riverview, Mesa.
The keynote speaker this year is Orlando Ashford, President of Holland America Line. As he speaks to the theme: “Financial literacy … Empowering Our Youth through Investing Early,” guests will receive a unique perspective on how young people today can bridge the gap between their opportunities today and their best futures.
The Thurgood Marshall Award of Merit honoree is Michael Johnson, former Vice Mayor for the City of Phoenix. Johnson is also a former member of the Phoenix Police Department and a business owner. He’s currently serving on The Arizona Board of Executive Clemency where he was appointed in 2017 by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. Among his many past accomplishments, Johnson served three consecutive terms on the Phoenix City Council from 2002 to 2013. He represented District 8, which encompasses portions of central, east and south Phoenix.
Johnson held essential roles in the development of economic, sustainable projects which impacted the district and city, many of which brought infrastructure into underserved areas. Some of these projects include the addition of light rail and expanded bus transit services; the downtown education zone comprised of the Bioscience High School, Arizona State University and University of Arizona; the downtown Sheraton Hotel; the transformation of the Civic Plaza into the Phoenix Convention Center; the Legacy Village shopping and dining center at 24th Street and Baseline Road in south Phoenix; and multi-million dollar projects at Sky Harbor International Airport, which include terminal renovation, new airlines and the Sky Train people mover system.
Through the brunch, the SEF and TMCF raise funds to financially assist local graduating high school seniors in their pursuit of completing a college education. The SEF is the nonprofit arm of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity’s Phoenix Alumni chapter.
Local businesses, organizations and residents are invited to support the 15th Annual SEF Thurgood Marshall College Fund Brunch by purchasing tickets and/or sponsorships.
