National Kidney Foundation of Arizona, NAACP to Offer Free Health Screenings, Town Hall in Phoenix on March 24
New Partnership with the NAACP Will Provide Additional Health Education for Communities of Color
The National Kidney Foundation of Arizona (NKF AZ) will host a free, comprehensive health screening aimed at identifying chronic diseases in their earliest stages. The screening is part of the Path to Wellness program, that records vital statistics regarding cardio-renal health. In one location, attendees will be able to get immediate test results, as well as consult individually with a doctor and receive a whole host of health education on chronic disease management.
Following the screening, there will be a community town hall meeting presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The town hall will focus primarily on kidney health and dialysis in communities of color. Dr. Marjorie Innocent, the NAACP’s Senior Director of Health Programs, will attend both the Path to Wellness screening and the community town hall.
The screening is open to everyone, but studies have shown minority populations are at a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease. Many develop chronic conditions before ever seeing a doctor. Once screened, participants at Path to Wellness can get health insurance counseling, schedule follow-up doctor appointments at one of the nine Adelante Healthcare clinics, and enroll in free healthy living workshops.
“NKF AZ is very excited to be partnering with the NAACP for the first major screening event of 2018,” said James Ivie, PhD, NKF AZ Director of Patient Services. “Both organizations know how vital this health information can be, especially in underserved communities that need more access to health resources.”
The Path to Wellness screening will be held Saturday, March 24th, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm at the South Phoenix Missionary Baptist Church, with the town hall meeting immediately following, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Appointments can be scheduled by calling the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona at (602) 840-1644 or click here: https://azkidney.org/pathtowellness.
The Path to Wellness program is a product of a community collaboration between the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona, Cardio Renal Society of America, Adelante Healthcare and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
