What is Kemetic Yoga?
Kemetic Yoga is an ancient African healing system practiced by the indigenous/black people of Egypt (Kemet). This system is rooted in the philosophy of restoring, cultivating and maintaining order and balance (Ma’at) in the body and physical environment in order to obtain optimal health and wellness. The practice of Kemetic Yoga is slow, deliberate, and applies the concepts of Rule of 4 Breathing, and Geometric progression of postures, to allow the student to enter into a transformative, moving meditation and healing journey on and off of their mat.
About the Instructor:
Dr. Afivi Adiro is a Naturopathic physician in the state of Arizona specializing in diet, nutrition, healthy lifestyles, acupuncture and botanical medicine. She completed her pre-medical studies at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX, and then went on to pursue her naturopathic medical training at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ.
With healthy lifestyle practices being especially foundational to Dr. Adiro, it was natural that the practice of yoga became a big part of her life. After practicing on her own for a few months via dvds and youtube videos of the more mainstream forms of yoga, she finally sought out a teacher that would offer a yoga system more connected to an Afrikan centered worldview. It was then that Afivi was connected to Master Teacher Yirser Ra Hotep, the creator of the Yoga Skills method of kemetic yoga, who she was later certified by in January of 2016.
Through her personal practice Dr. Adiro found that a greater sensitivity to your own body and mind could be cultivated with regular practice of the yoga skills kemetic yoga system, and she realized that this can assist a person in being their own diagnostic tool when things are out of balance. It is this heightened awareness of the self that is important in the case of disease prevention and self-care, as it can direct a person to make healthier choices in everyday life.
Dr. Adiro believes that prevention through healthy living is the most potent medicine anyone can take on a daily basis, and it is in this spirit that she practices medicine in general and has decided to take on the responsibility of being a kemetic yoga instructor.
As a holistic practitioner always concerned with treating the whole person, Dr. Adiro’s highest hopes is that she can utilize kemetic yoga within her community as a part of a holistic program toward long term health and vitality.
In addition to her current skill set, Dr. Adiro is currently completing her Masters in Oriental Medicine and Chinese herbology at Phoenix institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture to become a licensed acupuncturist.
