Michael's Cafe - Soul Food, Fun Atmosphere for Grown Folk in the Valley of the Sun

Finally had a chance to visit Michael's Cafe in October 2011 and judging from the crowd I saw on a Friday night, this gathering spot in central Phoenix will be here for a long time to stay.

Michael's Cafe, 5025 N. 7th Ave., Phoenix, bills itself as a soul food restaurant but the venue offers much more. It's a great place for grown, soulful folk to dance, have a few drinks, socialize and network.

The owner, Ricky Barnes, works hard to make sure that all of his patrons are having a good experience. He's lined up several different "themed" evenings including a karaoke night, First Class Fridays and Saturdays and Texas Hold'em Poker.

For more information about Michael's Cafe, call 602-248-2233 or visit:

On a Sad Note - Doc's Place in Phoenix Has Closed Its Doors

Every Team and Every Style for Everyone on Your List at NFLShop.com!It appears that as of June 8, the beat will not go on for Doc's Place, one of the premier entertainment and gathering spots in Phoenix.

Co-owner Nayo Jones has confirmed that the beloved venue has closed its doors - at least for now.

"This is not a somber occasion, this was a business decision that we had been considering for some time," said Nayo, who partnered with her father, Doc, to open the central Phoenix lounge and cafe in January 2009.

Even though Nayo noticed an increase in the number of out-of-town visitors to Doc's Place, she said that it was time for her and Doc "to move on." They both had a desire to focus on other music projects and they were anticipating a slow summer based on the turnout in previous years.

Nayo hinted that Doc's Place might come back in the Fall but admitted that it's a longshot.

In the meantime, Nayo wants to thank Doc's Place patrons for their support.

"People were in love with our atmosphere," said Nayo. "We did a good job and we left an impression on the community for almost three years."

Editor's Note: Despite the positive approach that Nayo conveyed as she talked to PhxSoul.com about the closure of Doc's Place, this is another incidence of Black businesses that succumb to the lack of support from the Black community. As a business owner, I can tell you all that Doc's Place would not have closed if Black people were packing the house on a regular basis. I went to Doc's Place on many occasions and I saw many a slow night. We must do a better job of supporting our businesses and we must also tell our Black business owners how they can improve so we'll continue to patronize them!

Where's the Steppin' Scene in the Phoenix Area?

PhxSoul.com regularly fields questions about the Step Dance scene in the Valley of the Sun. People assume that no one is steppin' out here but that's far from the truth. Steppin' will never be as big as it is in Chicago, but there is a movement here.

Lessons from Skipp the Rhythm & Blues Jazz Stepper

Skipp the Rhythm & Blues Jazz Stepper is working hard to bring everyone up to speed when it comes to steppin' in the Phoenix area.

He is hosting three classes per week, making it convenient for anyone who wants to learn this cultural partner dance style.

  • Every Wednesday, Skipp hosts Stepp Lessons at Bobby C's Lounge, 1140 E. Washington St., Phoenix, from 4:30-7:45pm every Wednesday. Cost is $7.00 per session.
  • Every Saturday, Skipp hosts Stepp Lessons at the Star Ballroom, 2848 S. Carriage Lane, Mesa, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Cost is $7.00 per session.
  • Skipp's third Stepp class is held every Saturday (except the first of the month) at the Elks Lodge, 1007 S. 7th Ave., Phoenix, from 1-3 PM. Cost is $7.00 per session.

For all who mention "PhxSoul.com," Skipp will donate $1 to PhxSoul.com to help keep the general Black population here in Phoenix informed about what's happening in our community.

For more information, contact Skipp at Jam_Ski@Msn.com or 602-571-8424.

• The Steppin' Community has various times and dates for classes. You can find this information on the Square-N-Compass Website (www.square-n-compass.com) under Events Around the Valley.

Black Business Owners in the Phoenix Area Need to Wake Up and Get on the Web!!

This blog is sort of a rehash of a column that I wrote in July titled, "Message to Black Business Owners in Phoenix: It's Wise to Advertise!"

However, this message bears repeating because I see way too many local business owners and organizations making the same mistake ...

What is that mistake?

They are not ONLINE!!

In the 21st century, there is NOOOO valid reason for an entrepreneur to open a restaurant, clothing store, nightclub, etc. or for an organization to recruit members or raise funds without having a Website! No valid reason!

A presence on the Internet is like a 24-hour-per-day/seven-day-per-week commercial for your business! You can write descriptions about your merchandise, services or event(s). You can add photos and videos. You can SELL your products and ship them to clients around the world! If you run a charity, you can collect donations online!

A Website will make your life easier because you don't have to spend hours on the phone or in meetings trying to encourage potential clients to do business with you. Your Website can do most of the work for you! Customers will respect you so much more if you are online because they can learn about your business without having to call! Trust me, a lot of people want to do their research about your company or organization on the Web before they make the physical effort to visit your store or office. If they can't find information on the Internet about you, they will most likely move on to another business!

How to Get a Website

If you don't have the technical skills to build your own Website, you should have funds set aside in your budget to hire a Web designer/developer. And don't be cheap! Be prepared to pay hundreds or even thousands to establish a high-quality Website that will allow you to sell products (e-commerce), receive donations and/or attract the customers you need to succeed!

How Do You Find a Trustworthy Web Designer/Developer?

Ask your friends and relatives if they could recommend anyone. Billions of people use the Internet! One of your loved ones has to know someone who can help you!

If that doesn't work, search on the Internet for professional Web design companies in your city.

Don't be cheap! Building and maintaining a Website takes A LOT of WORK! You should show your Web designer that you respect his/her craft and compensate him/her for that kind of expertise. Think about it ... what if all your customers asked you to give them your products and services for free? You'd go out of business FAST!

What About a Blog?

A blog could be an effective and inexpensive way to spread the word about your company or organization. A blog is like an online diary. You could write about your daily trials and tribulations as a business owner. The best aspect of a blog is that your readers can write responses to everything you publish. Having a blog shows the world that it is a priority for you to interact with your customers and members.

You can start a blog through publishing tools like:

Yelp.comIf you have NO money for a Website, you should consider using one of the following FREE Web platforms to tell the world about your products or services:

If you have basic experience with the Internet, many of these FREE platforms make it easy for you to choose pre-designed templates and add your text to the Web pages.

You can even sell tickets for your events online (no upfront money) through Websites like Eventbrite.com or solicit donations with the help of PayPal.com.

What Do You Do After You've Established a Web Presence?

  • You can't let your Website sit there - you have to tell everyone about it as often as you can!! It's like a garden, you have to give it constant attention to keep it alive and productive.
  • Your Website address should be featured on your business cards and other marketing materials that you distribute to the public.
  • If you have a brick-and-mortar store, you should have signs or banners that show your Website address.
  • You should find other popular Websites and find ways to list your address on the message boards, guestbooks or other interactive areas.
  • You should send press releases to local media that include your Website address.
  • If you have the money to produce TV or radio commercials or set up outdoor billboards, make sure your Website address is visible!

Bottom Line

I know technology can be intimidating to people but ask yourself this question ... can you afford to miss out on an opportunity to expose your business or organization to hundreds, thousands or even millions of people per day?

PhxSoul.com encourages all black business owners to recognize that word-of-mouth marketing can only get you so far. If you have aspirations to find a nationwide or global audience, you need to get on the World Wide Web now!!

Black Businesses, Customers Need to Work Together In Order for US to Succeed in Arizona

Yelp.comAs the owner of PhxSoul.com, I'm highly interested in seeing other black businesses succeed. In fact, I want business owners of all races to succeed!

One of PhxSoul.com's goals is to offer this Website as a platform for businesses to promote their products and services to the African American community. I also like to offer advice and ideas that could help!

One of the theories that I've been kicking around lately is the notion that black businesses and customers in the Phoenix area really need to work together to make sure OUR restaurants, hair salons, nightclubs, publications, clothing stores, etc., survive for the long-term!

I'm just going to come out and say it because I know that I speak on behalf of many African Americans in the Phoenix area ...

Many of OUR businesses are doing an excellent job of providing us with the facilities, events, services and products that we want and need! I encourage you to keep on doing what you're doin'!

However, many of OUR businesses are mediocre at best!

Yeah I said it! Many of OUR businesses are not cuttin' the mustard and that's why we are seeing our businesses close at an alarming rate!

Some will not like what I'm writing here, but I'm doing this out of love! I want to see us prosper in Arizona! Sometimes the truth hurts!

I can't tell you how many times I've gone to a black-owned restaurant and received rude customer service! Servers who treat you like they're mad you came, long waits for food and beverages, the bathrooms are disgusting and the food is just average at best. How many times have you heard a server say, "Oh sorry, we're out of that!!" Ahhhh! that drives me crazy!

Right now I'm dealing with a black-owned print shop that is providing some of the slowest service I've ever seen in my life! The job that I requested should have only taken a couple days. Instead, I've been waiting for more than a month! I've had the same work done at Kinko's and it took 24 hours!

The black businesses that have succeeded here for decades have done it because they understand the importance of having a good reputation. They care what their customers think, they adapt and they advertise/market to customers of all races. They only colors they care about are green, silver and copper!

One of the main problems in the Valley's black community is that many of us don't speak up to save our own businesses. I know I've been guilty of this. I've received bad service and didn't say a word to the owners and employees. Instead, I just decided that I would never go back. I know many people do the same. This is just wrong! We can't settle for average treatment!

If I voiced my opinions and told the former owners why their companies weren't up to snuff, maybe they could make changes and maybe they'd still be in business!

We as customers all need to make our expectations known so we are treated with the respect and good service we deserve! We can't afford to let OUR businesses fail! Tell them, "We're not gonna take it! No we aint gonna take it! We're not gonna take it anymore!"

So what exactly can black businesses do to retain customers?

  • Treat every person who patronizes your company like he/she is the President of the United States!
  • Make sure your office, restaurant, barbershop, etc. is fully stocked with the products that your customers want!
  • Ask for feedback from your customers! Provide those customer service cards so people can fill them out. Give your customers incentives for submitting the customer service cards - discounts or prizes!
  • Offer coupons to encourage people to buy your products/services.
  • Set up shop in a desirable locations - some of our places are in dangerous neighborhoods!
  • Train your employees! Make them feel like valuable assets so they'll take pride in their work!
  • Advertise to customers of all races - this is Arizona! Advertising on TV, the Internet, newspapers and billboards can be affordable if you budget properly! Advertising is IMPORTANT!

What can black Arizonans do to make sure OUR businesses stay OPEN?

  • Give honest feedback whether it's positive or negative!
  • Give businesses a second chance if they provide you with a bad experience at first - tell them what they need to do satisfy you!
  • Ask how you can help the business grow!
  • Stop asking for the "hook-up," you should be willing to pay money for the products and services you receive. That's the ONLY way a business will stay afloat!

I look forward to your feedback on this blog! If you agree or disagree with PhxSoul.com's opinions, share your thoughts by using the Comments area below!

Is There Really a Cure for Bad Breath? I Hope So!

We've all been in this situation ... you strike up a conversation with someone at Club Central or The Legion and then your nose quickly picks up on a smell that makes your eyes water and your ears twitch!

You do a quick breath check by covering your nostrils and your mouth and realize that it's not you.

Instead it's the person who's all in your face, talkin' nonstop and he/she has no clue that his/her breath smells like doo-doo!!

How many times has THIS happened? LOL!

You offer the person a breathmint and he/she always says, "Naw, naw, I'm cool!"

You think to yourself, "No you aint!! Yo breath is HOT!!"

I saw this banner ad and I had to post for a quick laugh! Why do I feel so bad for the kids who are featured in the ad?!

To all those victims of the bad breath blast ... I hope this product REALLY works!!
