Q&A - Getting to Know Coreece Swain-Lewis

Q: How long have you lived in the Phoenix area?

A: My folks are natives of Phoenix, Arizona. I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. We lived in South Haven, Mississippi for three years and then moved back to Phoenix in 2002. So for a total of 10 years I have lived in the Phoenix area.

Q: Where do you attend school?

A: I am currently a junior at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona. As well as dual-enrolled in the EVIT program in Mesa, Arizona.

Q: How did you find out about this pageant?

A: Someone anonymous entered my name. Whoever you are anonymous thank you for believing in me!! I received an invitation in the mail and I responded to it.

Q: Why did this particular pageant - National American Miss - appeal to you?

A: After I researched who and what National American Miss was. I became intrigued by the opportunity that the program offers such as tighten up my communication skills, self-confidence and poise skills I can use in my life going forward.

Q: How exactly were you chosen as a state finalist? What has been the process for becoming a state finalist?

A: To be chosen as a state finalist I had to interview with NAM judges. Which entailed going to an audition. They judged me on professional dress and interview skills. After the interview, the other participants and I were advised that if we were selected we would receive a phone call saying we were chosen. If not, we'd get a letter advising to try again next year. Bless God I received a call and a NAM packet with dates for the upcoming workshops and the state pageant.

Q: How many finalists are competing in the Miss Arizona Teen pageant and what is the age range?

A: Last year, there were 40 competing in the Miss Arizona Teen Pageant. This year I believe there is about 50 teens from around the state.

Q: Have you competed in pageants before?

A: No, this is my first time.

Q: Do you have a "platform" for the Miss Arizona Teen pageant? If so, what is it and why?

A: Platforms are not required for this event. But NAM does have a community service event where we collect and donate school supplies and the NAM winner will donate the supplies to the school of her choice.

Q: What do you hope to gain (besides the prizes) if you are crowned as the National American Miss winner?

A: I hope mostly to gain experience in public speaking, experience in outreaching to the community by performing volunteer services, and the opportunity to encourage others to be encouraged to be empowered with this type of confidence it takes to become a leader in my communities and workforces.

Q: Do you plan to attend college? If so, where?

A: Of course I plan to attend college. My first choice is UCLA. Go Bruins!!! I am planning to apply to many colleges in-of-state and out-of-state.
